Welcome

LETTER SENT TO THE SPANISH AMBASSADOR IN DENMARK REGARDING THE SITUATION OF THE GALGOS IN SPAIN

In relation to the answer sent by you to Miss Susanne Baudier of the Association “Galgos Necesitados Dinamarca”, and about which she amiably sent us an invitation to demonstrate (with all the proof/possible evidence) that at the moment in Spain the situation of the galgos (greyhounds) is “problematic”, I proceed to inform you:

1º. - The Animal Protection Society which I represent is based in Andalusia, one of the last Independent Communities in Spain in having approved its Animal Protection Law (2.003) and which has been unable to bring that Law into practice, because the Administrations (Interior, Agriculture and Environment) still have not studied how they are going to delimit executive responsibilities.

2º. - From that date, and previously, and in spite of the poor results, we have been carrying through two denouncement procedures a week for domestic animal abuse that, in the cases in which they are resolved it is never via administrative decisions but by the goodwill and excellent professionalism of some members of the police that help us end the suffering of those animals, accompanying us in the visits and mediating when the cases are difficult.

3º. - You refer to Art. 632 of the Penal Code, although I have to inform you that this Code has undergone a modification in several of its articles, having entered in force the 1 of October of 2004 and as a result it has been replaced by the 337.  In any case the existing jurisprudence on the matter reflects that, in Spain there has only been one condemnatory sentence with freedom deprivation, in a case of animal abuse in the locality of Cáceres (2002) taken to the Courts by the Lawyer Miss Covadonga Leon.  I am sure that you know about the very limited economic means with which the Spanish animal protectors have to work, and so I am sorry to say that at present we cannot aspire to hire legal help.

4º. - Mr. Sunyé, if in the information with which you have been facilitated says that the unacceptable situation of the galgos in Spain has changed in any way, this change has not been achieved by the authorities enforcing the law;  I make reference to one of the most recent cases that managed to make it to the media, where after an enormous effort by members of the Animal Protection Society which I represent we could rescue 16 dogs of the abuse they were exposed to by their owner (I attach photos) in that also participated: The Guardia Civil, local police, as well as members of the local administration that could see how it was necessary to even euthanize some of the rescued dogs due to the enormous physical deterioration which they suffered, as well as how there were 8 corpses taken from inside the property. Today, six months later, again there are dogs in that house and they are all "legal", registered and authorized by veterinarians.

The only thing that has changed in the situation of Spain with respect to the animal protection, is in the communication system, the use of Internet, that permits to show the horrifying situation that we have to live day to day and which puts  Spain  at the top of the list of countries where animal abuse is common practice. For that reason the “changing situation” can only be considered as being made possible thanks to the inestimable and enormous aid that we receive from foreign Animal Protection organizations (Germany, Belgium, Denmark, France, Holland, the United Kingdom, etc) that allows us to be able to offer a better life to dogs that arrive at our shelters, although without forgetting that surely we will be speaking of only a 10% of all the cases, and with the logical fear that sooner or later we will have saturated of galgos those before mentioned countries.

5º. - Finally I wish to tell you that we will continue to remain at the forefront of this situation because at the moment we cannot lower the guard, nor relax a single moment; please do not forget that in Spain they subsidize with public money more than 300 celebrations where the centre of the attraction is the abuse of an animal (exhibitions in all forms with bulls, beheading ducks, hanging galgos after people bet on them, etc.) It could not be any other way in a country where the national celebration par excellence is a bull being torture to death in front of children, all paid with our taxes, while the dogs left in dog pounds are suffering and at the same time the Administration refuses all aid to animal protection organizations that try to defend their lives.

I am truly thankful for the interest you have demonstrated in the solution of a problem that could have been solved years ago, if the political will  had existed, and for now we can only hope that our children will live in a more sensitive and just world for the animals.

Nieves Orellana de Molina

President of the Cadiz Animal Protection Society (Kimba)

WHY HELPING US NOW IS SO IMPORTANT!

Some of you will probably remember the rescue of more than 50 podenco ibicenco dogs in the island of Ibiza in May last year. This followed our legal procedure against Bartolomé Mari Ribas, the breeder and hunter who for more than 15 years had kept his dogs in the most appalling conditions imaginable, starving, thirsty, many very sick, on the very road, where they kept getting hit by vehicles and dying or becoming crippled to add to their suffering. The neighbours had complained countless times due to the danger that the animals meant on the road. Many tourists also complained because of the dreadful state in which they saw the broken walking skeletons but many people were afraid of this man in Ibiza and he was allowed to go on with his unspeakable activities.

As a result of our legal intervention last year the dogs were taken away by the police on a big raid together with some animal protection organizations. On November 24th will be the trial of this individual and we will be there. If he gets convicted he will have to pay a fine, as in Spain there is no jail for a “first time” offender of this kind but then once he has a record he could go to jail if he keeps breaking the law.

He is now pleading insanity (only in this matter!) so we need to prove otherwise or they will let him go to keep doing whatever he wishes with the dogs from now on. But…all this costs money! We need to hire the services of professionals from the mainland, and the expenses keep mounting.

Why is it so important that we win this case? Because most of the worst animal abusers in Spain are hunters and we need to make an example of this one and set legal precedent in a country where animals are mere objects to use and abuse at will.

Your donation will be very appreciated to help us go on with this case until this man is properly punished for the dreadful mistreatment of hundreds and hundreds of dogs and to stop him from continuing doing it. Thank you!

UPDATE
*********
Just as we were packing to travel to Ibiza for the trial we were informed that it got postponed. The accused got a forensic woman to declare that he is mentally ill in regards to his alledged mistreatment of animals. So, he is fine and healthy for everything else, according to the statement. The judge has now ordered the psychological tests we had requested, carried out by professionals in the subject of mental illness. We will keep you updated.
LATEST update MAY 2009
The accused did not not appear for the trial  so now the next date is May 25th 2009. We trust justice will be done.

REGINA: a symbol for all that is wrong in Spain

Regina was a shy and gentle shelter dog who was horribly tortured, sexually abused and killed by a monster who broke into her shelter 'Ribercan' in the town of Carcaixent, Valencia, on 29th May 2008. The shelter may have to close because of this crime as there is no security for the animals and the police have not made any efforts to investigate.

The Bright Eyes Society has offered 1000 Euros for information leading to the capture of the psychopath, and we urge other organization and individuals to help us up the amount so it becomes more "tempting"

The song in the links above was written to make people aware of the need to speak up for animals in Spain, this is far from an isolated case and the Spanish government must address the situation as a matter of urgency!
A petition for 'Justice For Regina' has closed with over 10,000 signatures.
Please write your protest in English or Spanish, preferably inserting or attaching Regina's photo above, to:

In Spain, beastiality (they use the word zoofilia, generally) animal sex videos are rented all over the country and they are all over the Internet, The Netherlands produce about 65 % of the sex with animals linked videos found on the Net, in Denmark animal bordellos are a profitable business allowed by the authorities and attract "punters" mainly from the Scandinavian countries and Germany. Some parts of the EU are becoming the new Sodom and Gomorrah, anything goes. Will legal pedophilia be the next "achievement" of the morally bankrupt EU where any cruelty is allowed if it preserves minorities "rights", "traditions" or "income"?

ALGEMESÍ CALVES TORMENT ON SEPTEMBER 24th, 26th AND OCTOBER 1ST 2007

http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=dNWtU3Kxp_Q

On September 24th and 26th and October 1st 2007 in Algemesí, Valencia, the "traditional" spectacles of extreme sadism towards innocent animals were celebrated again, as every year: Several baby calves get chased down the streets while the rabble stabs them with 6 to 8 cm spears. Witnesses say it is truly heart wrenching to hear their pitiful screams while they get tortured, and try hopelessly to hide from the spears. When they are too tired and bleeding on the ground the sadists cut their ears and tails and they are finished off with an 80 cm sword, stabbed up to 40 times. Thousands of people participate in these "fiestas" and many very young children witness the torture and massacre.

Description of the 24th events by one of the people working against this type of barbarity:

We got back this am at 5.30. Basically, the protest in Algemesí was organised by a local group of  young people and they had authorisation for the demo but the route the authorities gave them was far from the town (some 20,000 population) so in the end, it was a silent concentration in the town centre. I think we were around 150 people, mostly from Valencia

We stood (in silence) surrounded by about 200 pro bullfight townspeople who insulted us, made provocative grotesque gestures, danced and acted silly in the empty space between our banners and the police (who were not special forces and all looked rather incapable of much control except for the police chief) managed to avoid incidents (physical) but basically did not do much except shoo these people aside. Absolutely no freedom of expression for us, the organisers  After having regrouped us several times, we were made to leave after half an hour because "they could no longer guarantee our safety" and we went to a covered area and then dispersed. It was much like Tordesillas the first year, angry violent people screaming "Viva España" "Catalanistas" and other insults I will not repeat. There were quite a few recycled posters from Tordesillas. The organisers were very grateful and we hope to get something going to return with more people and buses and get some press coverage. We are to receive a DVD where you can see children jumping on and pulling the tail of the practically dead calves (up to a year old) in the arena so I will send that along to you as soon as I get it or perhaps we will link it on to Youtube. I would really like to attack this from the "save the children" viewpoint especially since Spanish TV 1 did not broadcast bullfights this season (I don't know if it was political or child sensitivity) but it will have to be discussed.

ENREJADO WAS SLOWLY TORTURED TO DEATH SEPTEMBER 11TH 2007, ANOTHER VICTIM OF A PRIMITIVE BLOOD FIESTA IN TORDESILLAS, SPAIN

On September 9th hundreds of people  travelled to Tordesillas (Valladolid) to protest against one of the worst animal abuses in Spain: the Toro de la Vega. A hapless bull is chased through the town by a huge rabble of drunken people armed with swords that stab him until he falls dying and then they cut his sexual organs and tail while he is still alive, as a “ trophy”.

This year’s victim was called Jaquerito, but he was too "peaceful" so another poor bull, Enrejado, too his place in the torture, we could not stop his dreadful destiny, how is it possible that this extreme cruelty is allowed in the EU?

A JOURNALIST OF THE PRIME CHANNEL TELECINCO AND HER CAMERAMAN WERE ATTACKED BY THE RABBLE WHEN TRYING TO FILM THE LOADING OF POOR JAQUERITO IN THE LORRY TAKING HIM TO THE TORTURE. JOURNALISTS WERE AGAIN ATTACKED WHEN FILMING THE ACTUAL TORMENT OF THE BULL:

Toro de la Vega Festival in Tordesillas

Hammerstein calls for the elimination of the Toro de la Vega Festival

The delegate for Los Verdes, David Hammerstein, has condemned the recent events that took place in Tordesillas with the popular bull  festival, where a bull dies in the hands of lancers.  The European delegate has demanded that the Autonomy of Castilla y León change the bylaws by which permits are granted to declare certain festivals legal.  The criteria used until now by the Autonomy is that a festival is declared as traditional if it can prove that the festival is 200 years old.  Therefore, it is the number of years that determines the legality, when the criteria should actually be determined by the level of cruelty to the animal.

David Hammerstein has declared that "it is a barbarity that tarnishes the image of Spain as well as the image of Europe in the world.  The autonomous government should not permit such a disgrace".

EU: FOR YOUR  MEP FROM STOPOURSHAME

Conscious that when you are in a position of public responsibility and it is your duty to seek the common good, you equally have a right to be informed of all the ins and outs of the issue in question; who and what exactly are involved, how things will be affected, what interests are at stake and so on.

Only after a thorough look at the entire bull-fighting world can you, MEP, form an opinion and then make a decision.

The bull-fighting sector, whose aims we dispute, is, nonetheless, a field which moves a lot of money. It is this issue, the financing of
bull-fighting, that we wish you to discuss in the European Parliament.

This web site has been created for you at our own expense; created by people who are deeply ashamed and pained that our money is being used to support an activity which is so out of place in an evolved culture such as the European one.

We will keep the web up to date as often as possible and we will try to include as many languages as possible because this is a mission which we believe in. We, unlike the bull-fighting lobby, have no subsidies nor grants.

If you would like more information in your own language, such as articles by journalists or experts in the field, or if you wish to aid us in seeking an end to our shame, please do not hesitate to get in touch

The Sadism of the Spanish Hunters /February 2007

I would like to tell you two stories, the events have just happened, of discarded hunting dogs in Spain. Please keep in mind that these are mere examples of what happens many times in Spain every single day.

Sultán, a young braco, got lucky after a life full of misery and pain and its planned sadistic end when someone found him at the last minute. He was in a "pudridero" (rotting place), the name the Spanish hunters give to any hidden and remote spot where they leave their unwanted dogs tied up, so they slowly die of thirst and hunger. Sultán had been left in a ditch, tied by the neck with a chain, a rope and a piece of rubber to a tree and with his back legs tied by wire to a post, they made very sure he would have a long and horrible agony. Although no-one would normally walk near the place this time a man did and heard the pitiful cries of the dog and rang the nearest shelter. They managed to free him in the middle of a dark and freezing night and in the dim light found a living skeleton, his body covered in wounds, his genitals raw, his eyes full of pus, the inside of his mouth all infected and yet, he was wagging his tail at them...The shelter people know of many "pudrideros" and visit them regularly to rescue the dogs there. Their work never ends although their funds often do!

In the autonomy of Extremadura, where this dog was found, hunters prefer podencos (most of the dogs in the pudrideros are podencos), careas and small ratoneros, so it is clear that not only greyhounds are killed in the most appalling sadistic ways in Spain.

Thor, a 1 year old pointer, was recently found in a river; a hunter had wanted to kill him and hit him on the head with a stone as hard as he could and then, believing him dead, threw him in the water. But Thor was not dead although he had suffered terrible damage to his head, he had lost an eye, he had an internal head infection and his skull had "moved", he crawled to the edge of the water and there he was found  covered in mud and blood, emaciated, showing not only his damaged head but also a life of starvation and mistreatment. In spite of all this he is a very loving, playful and sweet tempered dog...

If you feel you must act now, you can write to the Spanish Embassy in your country with this request: that the Spanish government stop ignoring the hunters crimes and punish them severely. By the way, the Spanish national project of law for animal protection that is currently being talked about in the Net has NOT been approved and does NOT address the problems with the hunters or anything else, for that matter!

POOR SHEEP, POOR US

If we are not able to stop the unnecessary industrial suffering of the animals, we will hardly be able to protect ourselves from the same insensitive and destructive standards that threaten our society in many other areas of human activity. It is an ethical and political matter but it is also common sense.
